City Employees Recognized, Lokemoen Appointed To Plan Commission At Merrill Common Council Meeting Held Tuesday

MERRILL – Merrill’s Common Council Meeting was held Tuesday (May 14th) evening at 6:30 in the City Hall Council Chambers. Employee recognitions included Terry Akey for 35 years at the T.B. Scott Library & Thomas Teetzen for 20 years at the Merrill Fire Dept. There were Discussions regarding the hiring of a Facilities Maintenance Manager & considerations for street use permits for 2 local establishments for 3 separate dates. Mayor Steve Hass appointed Pete Lokemoen to the City Plan Commission, replacing Robert Reimann. Lokemoen’s term expires May 1st, of 2027.

Chequamgeon-Nicolet National Forest Reopens Trails Affected By Storm

Nearly 5 years after northern Wisconsin was hit with a severe weather event, the Chequamgeon-Nicolet National Forest has offically lifted a closure order that affected the southeastern portion of the Forest. A windstorm ripped down trees and left many others at risk of falling back in July of 2019, spreading debris across many roads, trails and recreation areas. Firehouse Subs Planning New Location In Weston

WESTON – Plans are in place for a new Firehouse Subs location to be built in Weston. It’ll be on Schofield Avenue. Firehouse Subs is known for giving out large grants through it’s Public Safety Foundation. With a new location coming to Weston, now other fire departments in the Wausua region can get the help they need. The Weston Village Plan Commission needs to approve the site plans, which would then go to the Village Board for final approval.

Alzheimer’s Association To Host Event On Awareness Of Warning Signs Of The Disease

The Alzheimer’s Association will be hosting a 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s program later this month. The program, which focuses on recognizing the common signs of Alzheimer’s disease, will be held on Tuesday, May 21st from 1PM to 2:30 PM at the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Oneida County. The program offers tips for how to approach someone about memory concerns, & the importance of early detection & benefits of diagnosis.

Tomahawk Historical Society To Focus on Fund Raising For Future Construction

TOMAHAWK – The Tomahawk Historical Society is launching a fundraising project to help fund construction of another building at their Washington Square complex to house an antique print shop and a Tomahawk Boat Manufacturing Company exhibit. The Historical Society is currently planning to construct the approximately 5,000 square foot building behind the kindergarten classroom museum. The city’s Park and Rec. Committee gave their blessing on the construction in March. Next up is focusing on money raising efforts, which will take place throughout the summer.

Investigation into the cause of a duplex fire in Wausau will most likely take a few days given the extent of the damage done to the structure. Apparently the duplex didn’t have functioning smoke detectors. It’s believed that a bystander actually woke up 1 of the people inside. There is currently no suspicion of foul play. Early Thursday Morning Near Irma Fire Ends In Total Loss

Around 4:45 AM yesterday (Thursday, May 9th) Local Fire Crews were called to the scene of a fire that destroyed a home near Irma. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The home was located along Grandfather Falls on Faufau Avenue near the County Highway E Bridge, on Highway 107. Both the home & unattached garage were considered a total loss. Rainy Weekend Helps But Threat of Wildfires Continues

The rainy weekend may not necessarily have offered the most desirable conditions for outdoor activities. However local firefighters are thankful for the much-needed moisture. Fire crews responded to another 6 wildfires in Lincoln County and Oneida County between Thursday and Saturday according to the DNR’s wildfire tracker.
