Merrill Builds Business Growth Through Rural Venture Program

Merrill is continuing work to strengthen its small business community through a statewide rural development program. The city joined UW–Madison’s Rural Entrepreneurial Venture initiative two years ago, one of the first 12 communities selected.

“It is a longer term program that works with leadership teams in small rural communities and helps them develop a strategy for best supporting their local entrepreneurs,” shared Lisa Taylor, REV Program at UW-Madison Extension specialist.

During the first phase, local leaders and business owners gathered input from across the community. That process showed Merrill has been successful at launching new businesses, but needs to put more emphasis on helping them grow and remain sustainable. Now in its second phase, the focus is shifting toward building out that long-term support. Plans include new initiatives like the LinC and Learn Business Connection series launching this summer, along with continued guidance from a dedicated economic development coach.

“It is really nice to have somebody from outside the community come in and give a fresh view point on what they are seeing, what they are suggesting, and helping the local team,” said Sara Guild Executive Director for the Lincoln County Economic Corp.

City leaders say the program allows Merrill to tailor its approach, with an emphasis on strengthening connections and collaboration among local businesses.
