AS SEASON APPROACHES, ASPIRUS / DNR REMIND HUNTERS OF TREE STAND SAFETY

With the 2025 gun-deer season approaching, safety officials are putting extra focus on one of the biggest risks hunters face each fall: tree stand accidents.

Dr. Michael Clark with Aspirus MedEvac says falls remain a leading cause of hunting-related injuries. “You’re much more likely to get injured from a fall than a gunshot wound,” noted Clark. “It’s a concern that we should definitely take precautions to avoid.”

The DNR is offering a series of reminders as hunters prep for the season. They recommend inspecting the tree, the stand, and your harness—especially if they haven’t been used since last year. And keep an eye out: some trees, like ash, may be weakened by invasive species.

Hunters are also urged to maintain three points of contact when climbing and to use a haul line rather than carrying a firearm or bow. Letting someone know your plans and bringing a cellphone along are key steps as well.

The DNR adds that ATV and UTV safety is just as important, since many hunters use those machines to get to and from their stands.
