Bluejay Boys’ Baseball Season Ends with 12-7 Playoff Loss
In a game heard right here on WJMT and wjmtfm.com, the Merrill boys’ baseball team saw their season come to an end in a controversy-filled contest on the road against the Wisconsin Dells Chiefs 12-7.
The Bluejays scored first in the top of the first inning on a phantom double play where the Chiefs’ second baseman was clearly across the bag on a ground ball hit by AmericInn Player of the Game Cooper Wendorf (pictured), scoring Eric Grunenwald. The Blue jays then gave up three, four, and five runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, as the Chiefs roughed up Bluejay starter senior Cam Wallin and senior Quinton Kurtzhals for ten hits. Noah Klug finished the final frames for the Bluejays, who scored three times in the third, once in the fourth, and twice in the tops of those same innings.
The Bluejays end their season 11-13, and coach Shawn Schultz had high praise for all of his seniors, including Wendorf, Klug, Kurtzhals, Wallin, Alex Koblitz, Mason Bloch, and Brett Suhocki.
Bluejay baseball and softball fans will not have to wait long for summer action to begin, as the first American Legion boys’ game will be this Friday at Mark Simon Field in Weston, and the first girls’ game will be Wednesday, 10 June at Sunnyvale Park in Wausau as the girls take on Rhinelander. Friday’s coverage begins at 6:45 with the Nicolet Bank pre-game show, with first pitch at 7:00 on WJMT and wjmtfm.com. Coverage will begin on the 10th at approximately 7:15 for the pre-game show, with first pitch at 7:30. Coverage will also be seen for select home games for both the boy and girls on WJMT-TV on YouTube.
