WPS WARNS OF NEW PHONE SCAM TARGETING NORTHERN WISCONSIN CUSTOMERS

Local residents are being urged to stay alert for a new phone scam targeting utility customers.

Wisconsin Public Service warns of a sudden increase in scammers posing as WPS representatives and attempting to collect payments. Calls have been reported across northeast and north central Wisconsin. Scammers typically use familiar tactics, such as threatening customers with disconnection if they refuse to make a payment. Some customers have even been asked to provide banking information, or to use payment methods not authorized by WPS, such as direct payment or third-party apps.

Anyone receiving these types of calls should hang up immediately to avoid being taken advantage of by this wave of scamming activity.
