Merrill Defeats Antigo 2-0 in Boys’ Baseball Action

In a game heard right here on WJMT and wjmtfm.com and seen on WJMT-TV on YouTube, the Merrill Bluejay boys defeated the Antigo Red Robins 2-0 in a game shortened to 4 1/2 innings due to a serious injury to two Antigo players in the bottom of the fourth.  Quinton Kurtzhals picked up the complete game win, scattering four hits over the five innings he threw.  With the win, the boys’ conference record rose to 5-9 as they finished up the regular season with two conference wins this week.  This followed a recent perfect game 1-0 victory for Cam Wallin over the Northland Pines Eagles on May 5th in Eagle River.

The Bluejays scored twice in the bottom of the fourth with AmericInn Player of the Game first baseman Tyson Ott hitting a lead off triple that went all the way to the stone wall in left field, followed by an RBI double by right fielder Brody Klebenow before Alex Kopblitz sacrifice fly advanced Klebenow to third base after Antigo first baseman Jordan Pregler and catcher Seth Medo collided at full speed, with Pregler holding onto the ball.

After a 25 minute delay that allowed the Red Robins to bring a player over from the junior varsity game to avoid a forfeit due to a lack of players, Quinto Kurtzhals helped his cause with an RBI double to finish the scoring for the Bluejays.

The boys begin WIAA Division 2 playoff action next Thursday, May 28, at Athletic Park as they host West Salem. Girls’ softball playoff action begins on Tuesday, as Merrill hosts Hayward at the MARC.  That game will be heard on WJMT and wjmtfm.com.  Coverage will begin at 4:45 with the Nicolet Bank pre-game show and first pitch at 5:00 and “Downtown” Ollie Burrows behind the mike.

Stay tuned to get the latest updates on who is where when from Laura B and Artie Wy right here on WJMT and wjmtfm.com.
