Bluejay Girls Season Ends with 8-6 Playoff Loss to Medford
In a game heard right here on WJMT and wjmtfm.com, the Merrill girls’ softball season end on the road with an 8-6 (corrected: earlier version listed as 8-4) loss to the top-ranked Medford Raiders in WIAA Division 2 regional final action yesterday.
The Bluejays scored a run in the first on a double by AmericInn Player of the Game Kendall Klug (pictured) and an RBI single from cleanup hitter Abbie Krueger. The Bluejays game up three runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead before the Bluejays picked up two in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 6-3 paced by a solo home run by Klug off the fair pole in left field. The Raiders scored single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings before the Bluejays scored a pair in the top of the seventh and brought the winning run to the plate before falling short.
Mackenzie Herdt (also pictured), who no hit the Hayward Hurricanes Wednesday and struck out 20 hitters, took the loss for the Bluejays.
In boys’ action, Merrill advanced to the regional finals Tuesday with a 2-0 win over West Salem at Athletic Park in a game heard on the WJMT-TV channel on YouTube. The boys go on the road Tuesday against Wisconsin Dells, and you can hear all the action on WJMT and wjmtfm.com beginning with the Nicolet Bank pre-game show at 4:45 and first pitch at 5:00.
