Bluejay Legion Girls Defeat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 11-8
In a game heard on WJMT and wjmtfm.com, the Merrill Bluejay American Legion softball team won their second straight game, defeating the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers11-8 in their first game under the lights at the MARC. Maddie Barker both started and finished the game inside the circle, pitching four innings to start the game and the last two innings to earn the victory. She gave up a single run in the second inning and three in the sixth inning, with Jacey Lyon giving up four in the fifth.
The Bluejays scored a single run in the first inning, two in the second, and five in the third as Merrill jumped out to an 8-1 lead. The Chargers got four in the top of the fifth and three more in the sixth to tie the game 8-8.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bluejays scored three runs, two of which scored on a triple by AmericInn Player of the Game center fielder Reese Kaminski (pictured). Barker pitched a scoreless seventh inning to seal the victory. Merrill returns to conference play Tuesday on the road at Sunnyvale against Wausau Post 10 before returning home for a make-up contest against Crandon at the MARC.
The Merrill boys have three games this weekend as they host the Art Perkins Memorial Legion tournament at Athletic Park. After the Merrill Hall of Fame 2026 induction ceremony at 6:30, Merrill faces Crandon at 7:00. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:15 Friday night.
Saturday’s action begins with the Nicolet Bank pre-game show at 9:45 with first pitch at 10:00 as the Bluejays face Northwoods, with the final game coverage beginning with the pre-game show at 2:45 and first pitch at 3:00 as Merrill faces Rhinelander.
