Wausau House Fire Damages Two Homes; Three Pets Rescued

A house fire on Wausau’s west side Saturday afternoon damaged two homes, but all occupants escaped safely and firefighters rescued three pets.

The Wausau Fire Department responded to the home on Lazy Way at approximately 1:46 p.m. October 10. According to information released by Fire Chief Jeremy Kopp, crews arrived to find heavy flames on the outside of the home. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading further through the house or to nearby buildings. Crews then worked inside to extinguish remaining flames and check for hidden fire. Two dogs and a cat were rescued from the home. The occupants had smelled smoke and escaped through the back door before firefighters arrived. The home had working smoke alarms, according to the department.

A neighboring home sustained significant heat damage. No residents or firefighters were injured. Investigators determined the fire began on the home’s front porch. The department has not released a cause or damage estimate.
