WISCONSIN DNR REMINDS SNOWMOBILERS TO KEEP SAFETY AT THE FOREFRONT AS TRAILS OPEN
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding winter outdoor enthusiasts that as snowmobile trails begin to open, riders need to stay sober and be aware of unsafe ice. Weak ice and impaired operation are two of the most common contributors to off-highway vehicle tragedies around the holidays, and both can be greatly diminished with proper planning and making wise decisions. The state has seen 10 snowmobile fatalities to date in 2025, three of those determined to be alcohol related. Riders should also contact local experts like outfitters, bait shops and fishing clubs to monitor ice conditions.
It’s important to remember that the DNR does not monitor ice conditions, and to follow ice-safety tips knowing that several factors determine ice quality. Float coats, life jackets and rescue ropes can serve as lifesavers.
Snowmobile clubs are dedicated to ensuring a quality riding experience for snowmobilers. Riders can show respect for their efforts by staying on marked trails, and remembering that operation on closed snowmobile trails is illegal. More information on staying safe on the ice can be found on the DNR’s Ice Safety webpage. Refer to the Wisconsin snowmobile regulations and Wisconsin ATV Regulations for laws for operational restrictions, safety tips and more.
