TB Scott Library Hosts ‘Read to a Dog’ Program

On Wednesday, Merrill’s TB Scott Free Library hosted its annual Read to a Dog Program. Therapy Dog Tucker and his handler, Mark Meahlos were on site as children of all ages came out to share a story with the beloved pup. Tucker and Mark frequently pay visits to Merrill Schools.

Three levels of obedience needed to be achieved prior to Tucker’s job certification – Canine good citizen, community canine tests, and a therapy dog program. Meahlos and Tucker have been a part of the Read to a Dog program for nearly 10 years.

“Learning is kind of academic, social and emotional,” stated Meahlos. “So, it’s the social and emotional bringing of kids out of their shell a little bit. Then blood pressure also drops and good things happen.”

Kids are welcome to come to the library every Wednesday during the month of June to read to Tucker. Throughout the Summer, other events are hosted by the library, including the new Woodsy Dude program in July.
