Marathon County Steps Up Impaired-Driving Enforcement for Labor Day Weekend.

As Labor Day weekend gets underway, law enforcement agencies across Marathon County are increasing efforts to keep impaired drivers off the road.

The stepped-up enforcement is part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which continues through September 7. The Marathon County Traffic Safety Task Force includes officers from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, Wausau Police Department, Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department, Marshfield Police Department, Marathon City Police Department and Stratford Police Department.

The effort comes as Wisconsin State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies across the state increase education and enforcement efforts aimed at preventing crashes involving alcohol or drug impairment.

AAA is also providing a free option for people who have been drinking and should not drive. Its Tow to Go program offers a free and confidential ride home for an impaired driver, along with transportation for the person’s vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.

The service is available to both AAA members and non-members from 6 p.m. Friday, September 4, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 8. Drivers can request the service by calling 855-2-TOW-2-GO, or 855-286-9246.

AAA says the program is designed to eliminate one reason some impaired drivers choose to get behind the wheel: concern about leaving their vehicle behind. The organization encourages people to plan ahead by choosing a designated driver, arranging a ride with family or friends, or using a rideshare service.
