Rainy Weekend Helps But Threat of Wildfires Continues

The rainy weekend may not necessarily have offered the most desirable conditions for outdoor activities. However local firefighters are thankful for the much-needed moisture.

Fire crews responded to another 6 wildfires in Lincoln County and Oneida County between Thursday and Saturday according to the DNR’s wildfire tracker. All of the local fires were small and contained to less than a half an acre. No wildfires were reported on Sunday.

The fires served as good illustrations of how wildfires can spark in a number of different ways, as the list of causes included a campfire, debris burning, equipment, and a downed power line.

This year we have experienced an extended wildfire season, with last week being one of the busiest thus far. The DNR tracker showed a total of 68 wildfires last week, burning 260 acres. This puts the yearly total at 630 fires, burning nearly 1,400 acres.
